Fine Dining
Mary
awoke with a raging migraine. She lay in bed with her eyes closed, hoping it
would disappear. The light streaming through the window only increased the
waves of sharp stabbing pain. She covered her eyes with a pillow and waited for
the agony to subside. She tried in vain to remember if she had done anything
stressful the night before but she couldn’t. The pain wouldn’t let her.
Mary
slowly stood and waited for the spell of nausea to pass but almost vomited from
the piercing pain. She hoped some cool shower water would soothe her throbbing
head. As she stood under the spray she again tried to remember what she had
done last night. The mere attempt to think only brought fresh agony.
She
quickly realized the shower wasn’t helping as each drop felt like a sledge hammer
against her temple. Desperate for relief, Mary believed a large cup of coffee
would drive the snarling demons from her head. She dressed slowly, pausing many
times to close her eyes and rest upon the bed. Donning a simple robe and
slippers took forever but at last was finally able to travel downstairs. Each
step jarred her skull bringing tears to her eyes. Over and over she wondered
why she couldn’t remember the night before.
Mary
opened the door to the kitchen and stopped dead in her tracks. Her eyes flew
open, her mouth trembling with a silent scream. On the kitchen table lay her
mother-in-law with a huge knife still in her chest. Her torso had been cut open
and strips of meat had been sliced away. Human flesh had been haphazardly
strewn all over the kitchen. Pools of congealed blood painted the blue-green
tiles crimson.
Her
mother-in-law’s throat had been slashed as if to bleed her like a deer. Her
skull had been cracked open, her hair barely clinging to the tatters of ruined
skin. Her exposed brain was shredded as if it had been ripped apart by greedy
hands. The tongue which had given Mary so many snide remarks had been cut from
her mouth and lay against the refrigerator as if tossed casually away. Those
cruel eyes had been punctured by long soup spoons. Her intestines had been
pulled from the gaping hole in her stomach and lay curled on the floor like
long bloody snakes. The fingers had been cut from both hands and stripped of
their flesh. Their meat had been carefully placed in a pan on the stove.
Flies
buzzed through the air and began to settle, laying their eggs in the rotting
corpse on her table. The body was bloating, causing the skin to stretch like
silly putty. The stench of decomposing tissue was palpable. Mary’s stomach
pitched in protest.
Mary
heard a noise behind her. She turned and found her husband behind her. Shaking
with rage, she slapped him across the face and screamed.
“HOW COULD YOU! YOU LEFT THE MEAT OUT AND NOW IT’S
SPOILED!"
